ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, THURSDAY JULY 13th, 2017 – GIS:   The Grenada Government says there will be more emphasis on special projects and needy assistance for the rest of the year after the Supplementary Appropriation Bill was approved in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

It covers the period July 1st to December 31st 2017

The motion, brought before the House by Finance Minister Dr. Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, will see an additional five million dollars set aside for special projects, and an increase by 1.2 million dollars for Needy Assistance.

“We decided on special projects as important projects.

Everybody wants to see more local activity in the country so we add an additional five million for the rest of the year. So every parliamentarian, every constituency, every village will be happy with this because they are looking for their special projects,” Prime Minister Mitchell explained. “Needy assistance will be increased by 1.2 million dollars.

Everybody wants to see that because they have a lot of needs in the country for different areas”.

A portion of the money approved for in the supplementary appropriation bill which provides for Government to get EC$86 million, will be used to pay arrears to three regional bodies- Caricom, OECS and the Regional Security Services (RSS).

Prime Minister Mitchell also explained that since most of the money will come from grants, government’s fiscal space will not come under threat.

“The point we are making, as you see here in the document it is 86 million dollars, additional expenditure. 56 million dollars are grant support .Only 40 million dollars will come from the fiscal space that we have at this particular time,” said Prime Minister Mitchell.

“In other words, the room that we have based on the additional revenue that we have created which is part of the condition of the fiscal responsibility act.... In other words, we are managing ourselves”.
